abstract = {We propose a Special Interest Group (SIG) session during which audience participants will discuss future possible configurations of personal artificial intelligence assistants (PAIAs) and their potential capabilities to interact with other humans and other personal AI assistants. Participants will engage in design fiction and speculative design activities to discuss the boundaries of acceptable roles that personal AI assistants may play in our relationships in the future. The goal is for discussion and activities during the SIG to help attendees think through their own research and design work as it relates to exploring the impact that PAIAs and PAIA-like systems might have on our relationships with others and our relationships with technology. In the introduction to the SIG, we will use design fictions, sci-fi analyses, and short case studies to introduce a broad conceptual playing field that will inspire discussion for the 75-minute session.},

abstract = {Abstract Objective This community-engaged codesign project identified the changes needed to tailor a family resilience-building program, the Families Tackling Tough Times Together (FT), into a community setting. Background There is a need for low-burden resources to help families mitigate stressful times and build resilience. Guided by Walsh\'s family resilience framework, FT aims to improve families\' ability to cope, recover, and build resilience. Due to the success of FT during the COVID-19 pandemic, the program is now being modified to help families in the state of Indiana. Method Three codesign workshops were held with community service providers (CSP) and families. Participants engaged with the FT materials and discussions related to program usability and feasibility. Data were analyzed using a rapid analysis approach. Results CSPs stated that FT program materials fit with their goals and workload. Families felt the FT program aligned with their personal needs and day-to-day lives. Challenges and concerns with the FT materials included activities that required additional resources or that may be intimidating for families to complete. Both CSPs and families provided helpful suggestions on how to modify the materials. Conclusion The FT program was well received by participants and was viewed as a valuable addition to the services CSPs offer. Modifications will be made to the FT materials based on knowledge gained from the workshops. Implications This work highlights the collaborative nature of the codesign process as well as the insights gained from participants regarding the use of the FT materials by CSPs as part of their routine service delivery with families in the community.},

abstract = {Metacognition is vital for learning in general, and its value for HCI educational practices warrants investigation. In general, metacognitive awareness can help student designers consider how their thought processes might influence their design outputs. More specifically, it may also have relevance for helping HCI students develop intercultural competence\textemdashparticularly when students interrogate their own cultural biases and can reflect on the cultural implications of their work. However, there are several challenges associated with developing metacognitive skill in instructional settings, and these may be exacerbated in intercultural settings. In this paper, we share an account of how we engaged with students participating in a study abroad experience, using daily reflection sessions to encourage students to develop their metacognitive awareness and intercultural competence while they worked on digital civics projects in an unfamiliar cultural setting. We describe the metacognitive strategies that we identified within our students’ reflections. Through our narrative, we are able to highlight the intersecting roles that digital civics design prompts, new cultural contexts, and metacognitive questioning may play in how students develop and express their intercultural learning.},

abstract = {This article describes a Teachable Moment we refer to as the “Buckets and Lenses” approach, which aims to shift student thinking from rigid categorization (“bucket thinking”) to a more flexible, nuanced perspective (“lenses thinking”) that better aligns with the interdisciplinary field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Given HCI’s amalgamation of diverse disciplinary concepts, students often struggle with the application of “fuzzy” concepts, leaning on their prior educational experiences that favor definitive labeling over exploration and context-dependent application. This approach challenges students to re-frame their engagement with HCI concepts, encouraging open-ended exploration and the embracing of ambiguity. By illustrating the method’s application through classroom examples, such as discussions on the “waves” and “paradigms” of HCI and the role of sketches and prototypes in the design process, this paper highlights a strategy for fostering an adaptive mindset. This Buckets and Lenses approach is a pedagogical strategy that we have found helpful for enhancing HCI students’ cognitive flexibility and promoting a deeper, more critical engagement with the field’s inherent complexities.},

abstract = {As an inter-discipline or trans-discipline, HCI includes or references many different sources of knowledge in which students are expected to be conversant. The education of HCI practitioners requires exposure to an increasingly large number of these perspectives. However, how should this exposure be structured, with what level of depth, and through what metaphors? In this unsolved challenge, we outline the complex range of perspectives required and the limitations of typical curriculum and program design techniques. We then illustrate how HCI educators might use three different perspectives to consider and communicate program complexity to students: 1) content themes; 2) transdisciplinary lenses; and 3) design materials. We conclude with opportunities for HCI educators to leverage these insights to build courses, projects, and other program structures.},

abstract = {Introduction: Asthma deaths in the UK are the highest in Europe.
21 children died from asthma in the UK in 2012. Simple
management strategies shown to improve asthma outcomes and
identified as avoidable factors in the deaths of children with
asthma are being done infrequently by healthcare professionals.
Effective self-management has been shown to improve outcomes,
but this can only be done in the context of adequate patient
education. Lack of education potentially was a contributor in
94% of the children who died from asthma in 2012. Aims: To
develop an online resource to support and educate all involved
in the care of children with asthma Methods: 3 user groups
workshops were developed aimed at 1) Primary Care Professionals
2) Parents and 3) Young People with asthma. Workshops were run
in collaboration with Open Lab at Newcastle University, an
interaction design and computing research group. Volunteers were
recruited through advertising on GP websites and in the hospital
outpatient setting. Workshops centred around creating personas
to inform specific user requirements. Results: An understanding
of the knowledge base of the different groups together with the
main themes for user requirements was elicited. Branding and
usability was explored together with how the different groups
would most likely access the information. Discussion: Using
these recommendations, the Beat Asthma brand was created and the
online resource developed. Since its launch in November 2017, it
has had over 4000 views world-wide. Feedback from all user
groups has been excellent. It is hoped this resource will
support education in all who look after children with asthma,
empowering patients and improving self-management. Footnotes
