21 children died from asthma in the UK in 2012. Simple
management strategies shown to improve asthma outcomes and
identified as avoidable factors in the deaths of children with
asthma are being done infrequently by healthcare professionals.
Effective self-management has been shown to improve outcomes,
but this can only be done in the context of adequate patient
education. Lack of education potentially was a contributor in
94% of the children who died from asthma in 2012. Aims: To
develop an online resource to support and educate all involved
in the care of children with asthma Methods: 3 user groups
workshops were developed aimed at 1) Primary Care Professionals
2) Parents and 3) Young People with asthma. Workshops were run
in collaboration with Open Lab at Newcastle University, an
interaction design and computing research group. Volunteers were
recruited through advertising on GP websites and in the hospital
outpatient setting. Workshops centred around creating personas
to inform specific user requirements. Results: An understanding
of the knowledge base of the different groups together with the
main themes for user requirements was elicited. Branding and
usability was explored together with how the different groups
would most likely access the information. Discussion: Using
these recommendations, the Beat Asthma brand was created and the
online resource developed. Since its launch in November 2017, it
has had over 4000 views world-wide. Feedback from all user
groups has been excellent. It is hoped this resource will
support education in all who look after children with asthma,
empowering patients and improving self-management. Footnotes
